@Eliza You need a building permit for housing basically anywhere, that's not uniquely bad about California. Some places they are easy to get, some places they are... not. That's the part that's bad about CA.

@EvanDaniel That's crazy. People around here just build whatever they wish. There may be some nominal application process that conscientious people would go through but I'm fairly confident most will just do whatever they wish first and deal with any paperwork later.

@Eliza I mean we do have building codes and such! You're supposed to get a building inspector to verify the house won't fall down too easily or whatever, and that requirement generally makes sense to me?

@Eliza Anyway yeah housing in CA is kinda bonkers, but the "you need a building permit" isn't really the actually bonkers bit. Plenty of states and localities require building permits without being insane, CA just uses that process to be completely nuts.
